NEW STATE RECORD SET AT ROCKY MOUNTAIN RACEWAYS’
NITRO NATIONALS
Salt Lake City, Utah-June 26, 2009. Friday night Terry Haddock
broke a state record for Top Fuel drag racing as he ran a 4.80 ET
at 287.90 miles per hour.
“It
feels really great to break the record. We could have gone faster
but I let off the throttle when I started to lose traction,” said
Haddock after breaking the track record.
Doug
Herbert set the previous record of 4.845 ET in 2001.
A
rain storm momentarily delayed racing but committed fans stayed
till the rain cleared. Rocky Mountain Raceways’ officials and IHRA
officials worked together to dry the track and continue the show.
“It
was great to see all of the fans stay even after all of the rain.
It makes my job a lot easier. The track felt good and it turned
out to be a beautiful evening,” said crowd favorite Ed “The
Outlaw” Jones.
Racing fans cheered as Joe Timmons, of Salt Lake City, raced his
Nitro-Methane Harley down the quarter mile.
“It’s
always great to come to your home town and put on a great show for
the fans,” said Timmons.
This
high adrenaline drag racing action will continue Saturday, June
27. Saturday’s racing will feature two shows, one at 6 p.m. and
the second at 9 p.m. Adult admission is $35 and youth admission is
$10.
In
addition to drag racing, Rocky Mountain Raceways hosts oval,
motocross, monster trucks and drifting.
Rocky
Mountain Raceways next events include the Summit Super Series
(July 3,) Copper Cup Classic (July 4,) and Plaza Cycle Motocross
Park Race (July 10.)

Utah-June 27, 2009. Racing fans were ecstatic to see
Brett Harris set a new track record at Rocky Mountain Raceways’
IHRA Nitro Nationals.
Brett Harris, of Kaysville, Utah set
the new track record for Nostalgia Front Engine Top Fuel Dragster
of 5.884 ET at 243.11 miles per hour.
“We came here hoping to break the
record again. The car has been running really great,” said Harris.
Jack Harris said “The kid doing
well. He is a chip off the old block.” Jack is Brett’s father who
held the Nostalgia Front Engine Top Fuel record before Brett broke
it earlier this year.
Shawn Hart and Jed Dubach also
celebrated family wins as they both won in each of their classes.
Eleven year-old Hart is Dubach’s nephew. Hart won in the Junior
Dragster Minor race and Jed Dubach placed in the top two both
Friday and Saturday for the Top Dragster.
“Winning tonight felt really good.
This is my second win this year. I have been racing for four years
now,” said Hart.
“We don’t know any other way of
life. Some families go boating or hunting but our family races,”
said Dubach.
Headlining the event was six of the
world’s fastest machines. The jet semi “X-Treme Machine,” is the
drag racing world’s most powerful machine with 18, 000 horsepower
and 50 foot flames shooting from the back “X-Treme Machine” was
easily a crowd favorite. This is the first time “X-Treme Machine”
has been in Salt Lake City.
“It has been wonderful here at Nitro
Nationals. There is no way to explain the feeling when I get into
the truck,” said driver Joe “Pepi” Urban.
The J-79 jet equipped Freightliner
throttled down the quarter mile in 8.064 ET at 189.97 miles per
hour.
“IHRA Nitro Nationals in Salt Lake
City was a brand new experiment and a brand new concept. We will
be coming back soon,” said IHRA President Aaron Polburn.
“Nitro Nationals has been great
today. It has been amazing to go into the pit area and talk with
the drivers and see the cars up close,” said Carrie Newman of
Provo, Utah. |
