UTAH’S ONLY ¼ MILE DRAG STRIP TO BEGIN MASSIVE REPAVING PROJECT

Rocky Mountain Raceways’ IHRA ¼ Mile Drag Strip will begin a repaving project this week that will involve removing the old surface and placing a new  asphalt track in its place. Staker Parson will undertake the project that started on Monday, May 14.

“After 16 years of providing a great racing surface for the racers at RMR, our old surface will be removed and a new asphalt track put in its place.  Staker Parson will start by removing the top 2.5” of the current asphalt surfacethen throw down a nice new track from the 330’ mark to the finish line,” says Mike Eames, General Manager of Rocky Mountain Raceways. “They have machines that are capable of surfacing the road with continuous paving machines, which should give us one of the smoothest quarter miles in the country.”

Rocky Mountain Raceways drag strip was originally paved in 1997, when the Young Automotive Group purchased the racetrack and remodeled the entire facility. “Staker Parson is a company with great credentials and did the first paving of the track sixteen years ago and it was and still is one of the smoothest, flattest tracks in the country.  This repaving will again be the best in the country and should produce some great ET’s and speeds,” says Ron Craft, Rocky Mountain Raceways Drag Strip Manager.

The project began Monday, May 14 and is scheduled to last a week; an additional week is needed to prepare the track for racing. “The track will be ready for the Jet Car Spring Nationals on Saturday, May 26 featuring Jet Dragsters, Jet Funny Cars, the return of West Coast Outlaw Pro Mods, and the Summit SuperSeries participants,” says Craft.  “I’m very excited to have a new racing surface and would like to thank the Young Automotive Group for their support and believing in the sport of drag racing and all the participants that come from across the United States and Canada.

Rocky Mountain Raceways, an ASA & IHRA member track, had a full night of oval and drag racing on tap for Utah fans at Horsepower Heaven Saturday, May 12. Fans were on the edge of their seats as the Winged Sprints made their much anticipated return to the America First Credit Union ASA Super Oval while Jet Dragsters made their first pass of the 2012 IHRA racing season.

Murgoitio sliced through the turns with finesse and speed claiming the victory in a green, white, checker finish. Ready or Not…

It seems like only yesterday we were crowning the final champions of the 2011 season, and now we are literally days away from this Saturday night’s kickoff of the 16th season on the America First Credit Union Super Oval.

On tap for the season opener will feature the CarbonX Rocky Mountain Challenge Series and the ultra-competitive Maverik Modifieds. They will be joined by the Super Stocks, Hornets, and the H&R Equipment Figure 8 Trains.

I always look forward to the first event of the season because everyone is on the same field when it comes to points. Of course that all changes as the season continues onward, but it is still interesting to watch a team or two suddenly “figure it out” and become a championship contender. Continue Reading
